Tips To Protect Your Skin This Summer

when-to-apply-sunscreen

Summer is coming…With it comes beach days, barbecues, swimming pools, flip-flops, and plenty of fun in the sun! We all know that one of the finest joys of this season is being outside and enjoying the beautiful weather. However, if you don’t protect your skin properly, you risk getting sunburned and feeling awful while everyone else is having a good time.

So, let’s find out how to keep your skin healthy and safe during this time of year…

1- Don’t forget to apply sunscreen

It is important to use sunscreen everyday, not only on hot days but also on cloudy or cool days as damage from the sun’s rays can still occur. It is recommended to use  sunscreen that’s at least SPF 30 and protects against both UVA and UVB radiation. Also, at FYI we love Non-Nano organic SPF for trusted and safe ingredients.

Make sure to apply enough sunscreen to cover all areas of exposed skin, don’t forget to apply on your neck, ears, the backs of your hands, lips and the tops of your feet if you’re wearing open shoes. You’ll need to reapply sunscreen at least every two hours and more frequently if you’re splashing in the water or sweating.

2- Avoid dehydration

To maintain your skin healthy, drinking plenty of water is essential. The powerful solar rays and heat dry out your skin more than usual in the summer, making it even more important to stay hydrated. Make sure to drink loads of water during the day, and don’t wait until you are thirsty to drink it, as this could indicate that you’re already getting dehydrated. And remember! Best to use fresh and filtered water straight from your tap as water in plastic bottles may carry contaminants from the plastic containers. You can also innovate and drink flavoured or sparkling water, drinking water with fruits and veggies high in water content, like cucumbers is also a good option.

3- Avoid peak sun hours

Between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. is when the sun is most intense and produces the greatest chance of sunburn and sun damage. For that reason, try to stay out of the sun during these peak hours as much as possible. If you can’t avoid peak sun hours, look for shade to avoid sun exposure. Use an umbrella, trees, or other sun-shelters to find some relief from the sun’s intense rays. Don’t forget that some of the sun’s UV rays still get through even when you’re in the shade, so keep applying sunscreen.

4- Wear a hat and sunglasses

Wearing a hat with a 2-inch or 3-inch brim keeps the sun off your face while also providing shade for your eyes. Consider wearing protective gear for the rest of your body. This form of clothing provides consistent coverage and does not wear off over time like sunscreen.

Also, don’t forget the sunglasses! And consider using UV-blocking sunglasses, even though they are more expensive than conventional sunglasses, they are a smart investment because they protect the skin around your eyes from premature ageing.

5- Protect against other types of burns

The sun isn’t the only thing that can harm your skin. You should also take precautions to avoid getting burned by mistake. Some instances are as follows:

  • Cover the car seat and steering wheel if you park your car in a hot place to keep them cool to the touch.
  • When going along the pool’s edge or over the hot sand at the beach, wear flip-flops.
  • Stay away from hot BBQ grills and use sturdy oven mitts to open the grill and while flipping the food.

6- Check your skin often

Self-examinations should be done every month or so. Tell your doctor if you detect any new spots, changes to existing spots, dry skin or anything else that appears odd. A comprehensive skin exam should be done once a year by a dermatologist.

7- Make healthy lifestyle choices

Make sure to  treat your skin gently by using mild soaps and daily moisturisers. Hot showers should be avoided as this might strip essential oils from your skin. Consume a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and water. Get regular sleep and engage in stress-relieving activities.

8. Keep skin fresh with a skincare routine

Always keep your facial skin healthy and looking its best by following a skincare routine. It helps to rejuvenate the skin by removing dead cells and allowing new skin cells to flourish.
